What is AI SEO?
AI SEO is the practice of optimising a website so that AI-powered search systems can retrieve, understand, and cite it in generated answers. Where traditional SEO competes for a ranked position in a list of links, AI SEO competes to be chosen as a source inside a generated answer — in Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, ChatGPT, or Perplexity.
The distinction matters because the success metric changes entirely. You are no longer climbing from position 8 to position 3. You are either cited, or you are invisible — and the systems doing the citing weigh authority, clarity, and trustworthiness differently from how a traditional ranking algorithm does.
How is AI SEO different from traditional SEO?
The foundations overlap heavily. Crawlability, clear information architecture, topical authority, and genuinely useful writing still decide most outcomes in both worlds. What changes is emphasis:
Self-contained answers over comprehensive pages
AI systems extract passages, not whole pages. A section that reads correctly when quoted out of context is more likely to be cited than one that requires surrounding paragraphs to make sense.
Entity clarity over keyword density
Language models reason about things (entities), not strings (keywords). If Google's systems cannot unambiguously identify what your site is, who runs it, and what it covers, your topical authority signal is weaker regardless of how often you use the target phrase.
Citation share over position tracking
There is no rank 1–10 to track in a generated answer. The equivalent metric is share of citations: how often your content is selected as a source across a representative sample of prompts.
Structured data over raw text signals
Schema.org markup gives AI systems a machine-readable summary of your page — what type of content it is, who wrote it, what it teaches. Pages with accurate, connected JSON-LD are easier to retrieve and attribute correctly.
Why does AI SEO matter in 2026?
Zero-click search has accelerated. Over 60% of Google searches now end without a click to any website, because the answer appears directly in the SERP. AI Overviews, launched at scale in 2024 and expanded through 2025–2026, are the primary driver of this shift.
For sites that used to rely on informational traffic — how-to guides, definition pages, comparison articles — AI Overviews now answer the query before the user reaches them. The sites that still capture traffic are those Google chose to cite inside the AI Overview itself.
The three pillars of AI SEO
Distilled from how retrieval-augmented generation systems select sources:
Retrievability
Your content must be in the HTML that crawlers see — not locked behind JavaScript that never executes, not blocked by robots.txt, not so slow that the crawler times out. AI crawlers (GPTBot, PerplexityBot, OAI-SearchBot) are less forgiving than Googlebot about JavaScript-heavy pages.
Citability
Your content must be structured so a machine can extract a clean, correct answer from it. That means definition-first paragraphs, self-contained sections with descriptive headings, claims that are easy to verify, and schema markup that labels what the content is.
Authority
AI systems disproportionately cite sources they encounter corroborated across the web. Backlinks, brand mentions, verified entity signals (sameAs links in schema, consistent NAP data), and topical depth all contribute to this corroboration signal.
