What are Google AI Overviews?
Google AI Overviews are AI-generated answer blocks that appear at the top of Google search results for many queries. They synthesise information from multiple web sources into a single summary, citing the sources they used. For any query where an AI Overview appears, the cited pages receive a direct attribution link — and the uncited pages receive nothing, regardless of their organic ranking position.
How does Google select AI Overview sources?

Query Fan-Out
A single user query is broken into multiple sub-queries. "Best practices for AI SEO" fans out into sub-queries like "what is AI SEO", "how to optimise for AI Overviews", and "entity SEO techniques".
Retrieval
For each sub-query, candidate pages are retrieved from Google's index. Only indexed pages are eligible.
Passage Extraction
Specific passages are extracted from candidate pages. The system extracts 100–150 word passages that stand alone.
Synthesis & Citation
The model synthesises extracted passages into an AI Overview answer and attaches source links.
