What is GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation)?
Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) is the practice of optimising content to be retrieved and cited by AI-powered generative search systems — primarily Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, ChatGPT search, and Perplexity. Where traditional SEO targets a position in a ranked list of links, GEO targets inclusion as a cited source inside a generated answer.
GEO vs SEO: key differences compared
| Dimension | Traditional SEO | GEO |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank higher in a list of links | Be selected and cited in a generated answer |
| Unit of success | Keyword position (1–10) | Citation rate across sampled prompts |
| Content shape | Comprehensive, top-to-bottom coverage | Self-contained sections that survive extraction |
| Query model | One query → one result set | One query → many hidden sub-queries (fan-out) |
| Authority signal | Backlinks + domain history | Backlinks + corroboration across trusted sources |
| Measurement cadence | Weekly rank tracking | Weekly prompt sampling, averaged over time |
| Technical requirement | Googlebot crawlability | All AI bot crawlability (GPTBot, PerplexityBot, etc.) |
| Schema priority | Title, description, breadcrumbs | SpeakableSpec, Article, Organization with sameAs |
| Content length | Longer = more topical depth | Shorter, denser passages over long flowing prose |
